Two league wins as our 30th Anniversary Season draws to a funny close

This season marked the 30th Anniversary for Old Streetonians with all three teams in good health and the club as a whole looking stronger than ever when it came to an abrupt end. Not quite the end of season celebrations which had been hoped for.

Our Third XV had been a strong squad each week , sometimes fielding as many as 27 players in a single game and with a core of regular players the results were improving. Numbers across the club had been growing in strength with high attendance all season at training so it was no surprise that we saw Street field a Fourth XV as well as the Old Street Legends our Vets team on several occasions, progressing to the Semi-Finals of the Middlesex Vets Cup.

The second XV were in fine form having only lost once at the start of the season in a close game against Hammersmith & Fulham but clearly showing their superiority in the return fixture finishing the match 66-0 and with the promise of the MMT Cup Final to play they were crowned champions with 112 points and will be promoted to MMT 1 when play resumes.

The First XV had been playing outstanding rugby, undefeated all season with just five fixtures left to play and a Semi-Final in the Cup – it had been building nicely. Sitting at the top of the table on 79 points, eight points clear and a game in hand it was looking like there would be a big night on the horizon.

But the season was cut short -no end of season parties or celebrations.
Street had to wait to hear the outcome of the RFU’s decision on promotions. Old Streetonians were awarded a further 22.9 points for the unplayed fixtures based on results from their playing record finishing top of the table on 101.9 points. Old Streetonians are promoted as league Champions and will play at Level 7 next season.

In the 17 fixtures this season that were played Old Street 1st XV scored 678 points and conceded only – 223 this squad look forward to playing in London North West 2.

Season 2019-20 for the Onians will certainly be one to remember as we ponder on what might have been – with the promise of silverware and amazing results. We will have to wait to celebrate our success’ as Covid -19 Lockdown becomes another chapter in the story of The Onians.

Come on Piggies!
